The Ministry of Industry is conducting a manual check of International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers to identify if they have been illegally infiltrated. The process will be carried out one by one, ensuring that all proposed IMEIs are present in the current circulating IMEI. The Ministry of Industry has also reminded the public to buy cellphones at official places and avoid buying on the black market, even if the prices are cheaper. Four organizations oversee the IMEI registration system: the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Ministry of Finance, and cellular operators. IMEI registration can be done through cellular operators, Kominfo, Customs and Excise, and the Ministry of Industry, with cellular operators valid for foreign tourists entering Indonesian territory. The Ministry of Industry has sent a letter to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) manager to deactivate allegedly illegal IMEIs but has not coordinated further with the police.
