MOZAMBIQUE: BP SELLS POSITION IN MAFS TO PETROMOC 31/01/2023

BP Mozambique intends to sell its 50% stake in MAFS, the company created for fuel storage operations at Maputo international airport, to the Mozambican state oil firm and MAFS co-founder PetromocAccording to a notice published today by the Competition Regulatory Authority (ARC), the notification of the “concentration of companies” operation was filed on July 24 and is subject to public evaluation in the next 15 days.Having already sold its retail business to TotalEnergies in 2021, this confirms BP’s exit from the Mozambican fuel market.Earlier this year, the ARC announced that BP Mozambique had agreed to sell to Puma Energy Mozambique the assets of the aviation fuel business, including operations at seven airports.According to information disclosed at the beginning of last March by ARC, the deal with Puma Energy Mozambique would also involve a 50% stake in Maputo International Airport Fuelling Services (MIAFS), a joint venture with Petróleos de Moçambique (Petromoc), for the design and construction of an aviation fuel depot and the management of a fuel storage depot and aircraft refuelling equipment, including a network of fuel hydrants at Maputo International Airport. Now, ARC says that the sale of BP Mozambique’s 50% stake in the MIAFS will ultimately be made to Petromoc, which will then “hold all of the target company’s shares”.“BP Mozambique has, in recent years, embarked on the sale of its assets in Mozambique. This fact is associated with the strategic decision to progressively exit the country’s fuel supply market. In order to implement the strategy, during the years 2021 and 2022, BP Mozambique sent invitations to various entities to present proposals for the purchase of the assets of the aviation fuel business in Mozambique and its participation in Maputo International Airport Fuelling Services (MIAFS), and Puma was then chosen as the best positioned to acquire the target business,” the ARC said in a note last April detailing its lack of objection to the previous proposal.
