MOZAMBIQUE: CFM TRANSPORTED 24.62 MILLION NET TONNES LAST YEAR 31/08/2023

Mozambique’s publicly owned Ports and Rail Company (CFM) transported around 24.62 million net tonnes of cargo over the past year, against around the 29.9 million tonnes planned.According to a CFM note on the 2022 financial year, this figure represents implementation of 82 per cent of the target and a growth of 30 per cent compared to the previous year.“On the lines operated by CFM, during the 2022 financial year, around 12.3 million net tonnes were transported, compared to 15 million tonnes planned, corresponding to an achievement of 80 per cent of the target. This was 17 more than the amount transported in the same period of 2021”, reads the document. It should be noted that the company recorded a drop in its profits of about a billion meticais (15.7 million dollars). The company’s profits fell from 3.3 billion meticais in 2021 to 2.3 billion in 2022. According to the CFM annual report and accounts, even with this slippage, the company increased its dividends to the State in 2022.In terms of passenger transport, says the CFM note, 5.5 million passengers were transported in the period under review, which is a growth of 81 per cent compared to the previous year, as a result of the full resumption of railway operations after the Covid-19 pandemic, associated with the investment in railcars that were inaugurated in August 2022, increasing the passenger transport capacity in the south and centre of the country. As for the port terminals under CFM management, some 13.21 million tonnes were handled during 2022, compared to 12.51 million tonnes handled in 2021, which represents a growth of around six per cent, reflecting new investments that have been carried out by the company. The documents point out that, despite the positive results, 2022 was marked by several negative factors such as cyclones, rail derailment incidents, poor rail freight supply and the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
