THE NATIONAL FOOD AGENCY OFFICIALLY REGULATES A NEW REFERENCE PRICE for Consumable Sugar

The National Food Agency (NFA) sets agricultural and consumer reference prices for white crystal sugar, primarily consumption sugar. The reference price for buying sugar for agricultural consumption is IDR 12,500 per kilogram, whereas the reference price for selling sugar to consumers is IDR 14,500 per kilogram. On July 24, 2023, the new regulation replaced the old one. The NFA also issued a Circular Letter (SE) to keep farmers' sugar prices high.The revised regulation takes into account the 9.08% rise in sugarcane BPP from IDR 589,299 per ton in 2022 to IDR 650,000 per ton in 2023. The NFA expects this new law to set food prices for producers, traders, and consumers.Soemitro Samadikoen, General Chairperson of the Indonesian People's Sugarcane Farmers Association (APTRI), applauds NFA Regulation No. 17/2023, which aims to raise sugar auction prices to IDR 12,500 per kg, or the buy reference price. Southwest Maluku and the Tanimbar Islands have the highest retail sugar prices, at IDR 20,000 and Rp. 18,000 per kilogram, respectively.
