OIL AND GAS COMPANIES CAN MONETIZE CARBON CREDITS

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCS/CCUS) is a technology that captures and stores carbon emissions to prevent their release into the atmosphere. This technology can increase oil and gas production and provide financial benefits from carbon monetization. The Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Center of Excellence for CCS and CCUS has been widely implemented in Indonesia since 2020, with a joint study with BP, an oil and gas company managing the Tangguh LNG project in West Papua. The government has issued Regulation No 2 of 2023 concerning the implementation of CCS/CCUS in upstream oil and gas business activities, which aims to meet emission needs, capture and inject CO2 emissions, and support oil and gas production. BP's CCS/CCUS is expected to start operating in 2026. However, support for regulations and technical issues, such as transportation, injection, leaks, safety, and environmental matters, is needed for optimal implementation. The government has approved BP's plan to develop the Tangguh LNG project in 2021, with the potential for additional gas reaching 1.3 trillion cubic feet.Link di fonte: https://www.kompas.id/baca/ekonomi/2023/08/01/perusahaan-bisa-monetisasi-karbon-kredit-dalam-ccsccus (ICE GIACARTA)
