POLAND: THE LNG TERMINAL IN ŚWINOUJŚCIE BREAKS TRANSSHIPMENT RECORDS

Anna Łukaszewska-Trzeciakowska, Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister and at the same time government plenipotentiary for strategic energy infrastructure, announced that from January to July this year, 4,200 tank cars were loaded at the LNG terminal in Świnoujście, which is a record result. In 2019, 1,100 tank cars were transhipped. A year later – 1,600. A large increase took place in 2021, when transshipments amounted to 3,300, in 2022 it slightly decreased to 3,100.The opening of the LNG terminal in 2015 was a key step towards diversifying hydrocarbon supplies to Poland and reducing the long-term dependence on the Russian Federation in this regard. The commissioning of the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline in 2022 made it possible to de facto fully break with dependence on supplies from the east. However, likely, the demand for natural gas, after a temporary decline, will soon be on the rise again, due to the construction of more gas and steam power plants in Poland. Therefore, in the coming years a floating LNG regasification unit is planned to be built in the seaport in Gdańsk, the potential of which will probably be higher than in the case of the terminal in Świnoujście.
