ALBA’S PS5 BLOCK 4 PROJECT, BAHRAIN

Aluminium Bahrain (Alba), one of the world's largest aluminium smelters producing over 1.6 million metric tonnes annually, is undertaking the Alba's Power Station 5 (PS5) Block 4 project in Bahrain. This initiative involves the construction of a new 680.9MW combined-cycle power plant, known as Block 4, to expand the capacity of the existing PS5. The new block will raise the PS5 capacity from 1,800MW to 2,481MW. The expansion project achieved financial closure in November 2022, and construction commenced in July 2022, with an expected completion within two years. The project site is located in the Alba Industrial Estate in Manama, Bahrain. The new Block 4 will be constructed south of the existing PS5 on previously used land. The expanded plant will feature a 475.4MW J Class gas turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), and a two-cylinder tandem, single axial exhaust type steam turbine generator producing 217.3MW. It will operate on 100% Khuff gas, 100% residual, or any proportional mixture of the two.Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Mitsubishi Power and SEPCOIII consortium signed a contract to design, engineer, procure, construct, and commission the new 680.9MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Block. Mitsubishi Power will provide a M701JAC gas turbine and a steam turbine, along with a Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) that includes repairs and services for PS5 Block 4. Additionally, Mitsubishi will implement its intelligent solutions, TOMONI, which utilize big data to offer real-time predictive insights and control to optimize power plant performance and environmental goals. The PS5 Block 4 expansion project reflects Alba's commitment to enhancing power generation capacity and supporting its aluminium smelter operations in Bahrain.
