Kyrgyz, Uzbek PMs discuss plans to build cascade of HPPsKyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have discussed the construction of a cascade of Chatkal Hydropower Plants (HPPs), the Kyrgyz government's press service said on Wednesday."The prime ministers discussed the construction project of the cascade of Chatkal HPPs during the tenth session of the joint intergovernmental commission on bilateral cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan," the statement said.A memorandum of the Energy Ministries of Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on a joint study of the possibilities of the Chatkal HPP cascade construction was signed in Bishkek on January 27, 2023, during Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's visit. Its capacity should reach 1,800 MW: the Barkrau HPP at 700 MW, the Lower Chatkal HPP at 110 MW. The two HPPs are planned to produce 2,650,000 kWh of electricity annually.On August 4, the Kyrgyz government set up an interdepartmental working group to study the construction of a cascade of hydropower plants on the Chatkal River.
