Indonesia's Deputy Minister of Trade, Jerry Sambuaga, has emphasized the importance of upholding equality and fairness in free trade with the European Union (EU) during the 55th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting (AEM) in Semarang, Central Java. The meeting was held as part of the 55th AEM, which is being held under Indonesia's chairmanship in ASEAN this year. Sambuaga emphasized the need for balance and objective principles to incorporate fairness and equality values into policies. The statement was made amid recent dynamics in Indonesia's relations with the EU following the EU's decision to issue the European Union Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Sambuaga emphasized that related parties should consider objective principles during policy formulation to create a fair trade climate for all. He stated that Indonesia aims to foster strategic and reciprocal trade cooperation with all parties, including the EU, and will continue to encourage all parties to uphold objective principles that bring about equality and fairness.
