EUROPEAN COMMISSION SUSPECTS CIRCUMVENTION OF EU SANCTIONS IN PLYWOOD imports from Kazakhstan and Turkey

The European Commission is currently investigating the imports of birch plywood into the European Union from Turkey and Kazakhstan to confirm the country of origin and determine whether these imports are circumventing EU antidumping measures imposed on Russian plywood. The relevant document is published on the EC website. The investigation was initiated Monday at the request of the Woodstock Consortium, EC materials showed. It will apply to birch plywood under the customs code TN VED 4412 33.The EC has concerns that imports from Turkey and Kazakhstan might be used to circumvent restrictions on imports of birch plywood from Russia. In July 2022, The EU banned imports of nearly all Russian forest products, including plywood. However, even before that, in 2021, the EU imposed anti-dumping duties on birch plywood from Russia, ranging from 14.4% to 15.72%, depending on the producer. Despite the higher duties, Russia supplied about half of the EU's birch plywood until the ban on imports was put in place. After being sanctioned, Russian plywood producers redirected the exports of their products to countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.Fonte: Interfax-Kazakhstan (ICE ALMATY)
