KUWAIT OIL COMPANY EXTENDS DEAL FOR JURASSIC GAS PROJECT

The state-owned upstream operator Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has asked the country’s Central Agency for Public Tenders (CAPT) to extend a contract that involves the development of KOC’s Jurassic gas fields in two blocks in North Kuwait, according to industry sources. The contract that has been extended is with US-based Schlumberger Limited, which does business as SLB.The value of the extended deal for the two blocks is believed to be around $21.16m and $18.67m respectively. In August 2016, KOC awarded SLB a $380m contract to construct an expansion of the Jurassic non-associated gas facilities at the West Raudhatain field in Kuwait. The project was completed in 2019.Two other Jurassic oil and gas projects being developed by KOC were progressing rapidly and could be completed before the end of the year, ahead of their contractual schedule of 780 days. The two projects are known as Jurassic Production Facilities 4 (JPF 4) and JPF 5.KOC awarded the main $398m contract for JPF 4 to Kuwait-based Spetco in December 2021. China’s Jereh won a contract worth $426m for JPF 5 in the same month.JPF 4 is being built close to the Sabriyah field in northern Kuwait. JPF 5 is less than 10 kilometres east of JPF 4.Both facilities will test, process, treat and handle wet and sour hydrocarbon well fluids from several oil and gas fields. These include Raudhatain, Sabriyah, Northwest Raudhatain, Umm Niqa, Dhabi, Bahr, Marratt and Najmah-Sarjelu, and other formations in the Jurassic fields.Kuwait is tapping the Jurassic carbonate reservoirs in the north to meet soaring gas consumption.KOC started gas production from its Jurassic sour gas field in May 2008 with the commissioning of the upstream project known as early production facility 50.The Jurassic reservoirs contain a variety of hydrocarbons, ranging from oil to gas condensate with sour gas.
