KUWAIT OIL COMPANY REINTRODUCES ADVISER POLICY

The state-owned upstream operator Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has reintroduced a policy that allows senior managers to become advisers to the companyThe policy was given the green light to be reintroduced in August ahead of the latest reorganisation, which will become effective on 3 September. As part of the reorganisation, four senior managers will be redesignated as advisers and nine will be redesignated as “senior specialists”.One industry source said: “Earlier this month, KOC told its employees that a decision had been made to reintroduce this policy that allows senior managers to become advisers or senior specialists.“It hasn’t been used for a long time, but in the past, it was a way of allowing senior staff members, who are maybe nearing the end of their careers, to make way for upcoming talent while still being able to share their knowledge and experience.“Some time ago, it was decided that instead of keeping these people on as advisers and senior specialists, it was better for operational costs if they left the company entirely.“Now it has been reintroduced, as it was seen as the only way of allowing the planned sweeping leadership changes that are being brought in at the company.”On 29 August, KOC internally distributed details of what is being referred to as the biggest reorganisation in the company’s history. The changes come after years of stalling activity in the country’s oil and gas projects market. The plans outlined in the internal documents include assigning dozens of senior managers to new roles and disbanding whole teams within the organisation.Although the outlined plans are due to be effective from 3 September, they leave dozens of leadership roles vacant with no set schedule announced for when they will be filled.
