Indonesia's Trade Minister, Zulkifli Hasan, has emphasized the government's role in protecting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) from competition with imported products sold on social commerce platforms. He visited Tanah Abang Market in Jakarta and received complaints from traders about decreased turnover and lack of buyers due to competition with imported products at cheaper prices. Zulhas called this unfair competition, where imported products can enter the market without Indonesian National Standard (SNI) certification, security guarantees, or halal certification, while domestic products must meet these requirements. The Ministry of Trade has issued Minister of Trade Regulation Number 31 of 2023, which regulates buying and selling activities on social commerce platforms. The government will notify social commerce platforms about these regulations and may provide sanctions in the form of warning letters or blocking by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kemenkominfo) if platforms continue to violate the rules.
