POLAND: WĘGLOKOKS IS THE NEW OWNER OF THE NORTHERN PORT OF GDANSK

The company managing the Northern Port of Gdańsk (in Polish: Port Północny) has a new main shareholder. 80.43% of the shares were acquired by Węglokoks, a capital group owned by the State Treasury, present in the logistics, metallurgical and mining sectorsThe Northern Port was built in the 1970s as a deep-water part of the seaport in Gdańsk, intended to handle shipping of hard coal and metal ores. Since 2008 the Northern Port belonged to the Belgian capital group SEA-Invest. The financial operation of Weglokoks is aimed to regain control of Polish state over an element of the infrastructure of critical importance for the national energy security.Weglokoks plans large investments, including a reconstruction of the agro terminal (shipping grain, feed and soybean meal), and – as a part of Węglokoks plans of the development of the steel industry segment – the expansion of the scrap terminal. The total shipment capacity, currently set at 10 million tons, is to increase to 15 million tons, and ultimately even to 20 million tons. (ICE VARSAVIA)
