IRAQI REVIVES 25 LONG-STALLED WATER PROJECTS

The Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources has announced that it will resume 25 projects that have remained inactive for the past decade. The Ministry also disclosed the withdrawal of the Eastern Jazeera Irrigation Project from two companies with a history of delays.Khalid Shamal, the Ministry's spokesperson, informed the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) that this initiative is driven by the release of funds by the Ministry of Finance. The government program encompasses 32 projects, of which 27 are under the jurisdiction of the Reform Commission.Out of the 27, 25 have been stagnant for ten years, distributed across various provinces, including Kirkuk, Najaf, Babil, Nasiriyah, Basra, Diwaniyah, Samawa, and Anbar. Shamal emphasized the government's commitment to revive these projects, which have incurred significant financial investments. One such project is the Eastern Jazeera Irrigation Project, with an estimated cost exceeding 60 billion dinars [$46 million]. Since 2010, it had been entrusted to Kurdish and Turkish companies, both of which struggled to make progress. Shamal noted that previous ministers in charge of the Ministry failed to take action against these companies for various reasons.Minister of Water Resources, Awn Dhiab Abdullah, made what INA called "a decisive and bold decision" in coordination with the Ministry of Planning to withdraw the project from these companies. Three government-owned companies have been invited to take over the project, with the work set to be transferred within 15 days to either the Iraq Company, Al Rafidain, or Al Faw.The Eastern Jazeera Irrigation Project holds significant importance and will contribute to the state's budget. It involves a joint effort concerning irrigation, utilizing a portion of rainwater and another segment directly sourced from the Mosul Dam. (ICE AMMAN)
