HYUNDAI STEEL BOOSTS ECO-FRIENDLY STEEL PRODUCTION

Hyundai Steel said it will continue to boost its eco-friendly steel lineup as part of its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality. The nation's second-largest steelmaker showcased its quake- and fire-resistant H CORE steel brand at the Steel & Metal Korea 2023 exhibition held in Daegu, Oct. 11-13. “Introduced in 2017, H CORE is the first quake-resistant brand in Korea,” a company official said. "H CORE can be used in all construction fields including civil engineering and plants." The steelmaker said it will also introduce a customized service for its partners ― the H CORE Solution. Based on its partners’ construction needs, Hyundai Steel plans to provide customized H CORE products and designs with low carbon emissions. In September last year, Hyundai Steel also introduced premium 1.0 GPa steel plates using its latest electric furnace, a world first. The electric furnace helps reduce carbon emissions in the production process by 30 percent compared to traditional blast furnaces. It also produced ultra-high-strength rolling steel plates for cars using the eco-friendly electric furnance. Hyundai Steel, a unit of Hyundai Motor Group, said it will foster its metal separator business as a future growth engine. A metal separator uses a powerful magnetic field to separate non-ferrous metals from an input waste or ore stream. It is considered to be a core technology in producing fuel cell electric vehicles. Hyundai Steel also provides hydrogen, a byproduct of evaporation in steel production in a furnace. The hydrogen can be used as fuel for fuel cell electric vehicles. It has been supplying 3,000 tons of hydrogen every year, and plans to expand the volume to 20,000 tons next year and 100,000 tons by 2030. (ICE SEOUL)
