PSMC TO BUILD WAFER FOUNDRY IN JAPAN'S MIYAGI PREFECTURE

Taipei, Oct. 31 (CNA) Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (PSMC) announced Tuesday that it has chosen Miyagi prefecture as the location for its new 12-inch wafer foundry in Japan. The Second Northern Sendai Central Industrial Park, situated in Kurokawa District's Ohira Village, is the planned site, the New Taipei-based chipmaker revealed in a press statement.According to PSMC, a number of factors were taken into consideration in choosing the fab location, including the robustness of infrastructure such as water supply, drainage, high-voltage power supply and logistical capabilities. The industrial park was chosen due to the quality of its environment and the potential for future industry-university cooperation, the company said.In July, PSMC announced that it was joining forces with Tokyo-based financial services company SBI Holdings Inc. to establish a new wafer foundry in Japan. A month later, the two companies jointly established JSMC Co., Ltd. and began preparations to set up a wafer fab in the country.A memorandum of understanding was signed Tuesday with SBI, PSMC and Japan's Miyagi Prefecture government based on the premise that the Japanese government will provide related subsidies, though the amount has yet to be determined, PSMC said.PSMC said SBI is committed to working closely with the Japanese government, Miyagi prefecture, partners and relevant financial institutions on further details of the investment project, while indicating that more information will be announced after the details are finalized.(By Chang Chien-chung and Ko Lin)Enditem/AW (ICE TAIPEI)
