POLAND: NUMBER OF STORES DECLINES

The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has reported that in 2022 the number of retail stores in Poland dropped by 1.6 percent y/y, i.e. by 5,100 to ca. 326,000. Commenting on the matter, Maciej Ptaszyński, President of the Management Board at the Polish Chamber of Trade (PIH), notes that in the general food industry the number of stores rose by 10 percent, which is not a bad result. According to Ptaszyński, a downward trend is observed in the segment of stores that are not affiliated to group purchasing organisations or that do not operate under the franchise model, which are mechanisms enabling stores to compete effectively against discount store chains.
