FOOD PRICES RISE FASTER THAN IN GERMANY

The latest data from Eurostat show that in October 2023, the Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) in Poland was at 6.3 percent y/y, compared to barely 3 percent y/y in Germany. Experts also note that over the past 12 months, prices of as many as 38 food products increased faster or decreased more slowly than in Poland’s western neighbour. For instance, in Germany butter prices fell by 27.6 percent y/y while in Poland by only 14.3 percent y/y, with potato prices up by 13.8 percent y/y in Germany and up by a staggering 27.3 percent y/y in Poland. Still, the biggest difference is observed in thermal energy prices, which leapt by 24 percent y/y in Poland and fell by 3.1 percent y/y in Germany. (ICE VARSAVIA)
