CROATIA: EUR 3.5 BILLION FOR KEY TRANSPORT INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

Deputy Prime Minister and Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure Minister Oleg Butkovic said on Monday at the opening of the Congress of the Croatian Road and Rail Association “Via Vita,” that current investments into transportation infrastructure currently amount to EUR 3.5 billion, and that this current investment cycle is predominantly financed through European Union (EU) funds, Croatian media report.  Butkovic also claimed that the next ten years will be marked by heavy investments in the railway sector as "we are already investing over a billion euros in the modernization of railway infrastructure,” and these investments are expected to reach EUR 6 billion by 2030.  Regarding the roads, Butkovic highlighted priorities such as the completion of the corridor towards Hungary, the highway to Sisak, and the construction of the Adriatic-Ionian corridor, for which EUR 1.5 billion have been secured – while additional plans will highways from Krizevci to Zuta Lokva and Metkovic to Dubrovnik, as well as a series of express roads in the continental part of Croatia.  Butkovic also announced that in Istria, the Government will complete a highway network “Istrian Y” and is discussing the possibility of the highway extending to the town of Labin, forming a connection.  Josip Skoric, President of Hrvatske ceste (HC), the stat-owned roads maintenance company, told the congress that the next four years are expected to see the commencement of significant strategic projects, and perhaps the largest wave of investments to-date.
