LITHUANIA ALLOWS LONGER SALE OF EXPIRED GROCERIES

The Lithuanian parliament, Seimas, passed amendments to the Food Law, allowing the sale of expired but still consumable groceries starting January 1. This aims to combat food waste. The approved sale includes products labeled "best before" that remain safe for consumption after the expiration date. Guidelines will be set by the Economy and Innovation Ministry, covering non-perishable items like coffee, tea, flour, groats, and oil. Perishable goods are excluded. Sellers must ensure safety and quality, labeling these items clearly. There's a proposal for a 30-45 day extension post-expiration, pending approval from the State Food and Veterinary Service, aligning with Slovakia's practice. (ICE VARSAVIA)
