LITHUANIAN GOVERNMENT APPROVES ADJUSTED 2024 BUDGET

The Lithuanian government has greenlit an adjusted 2024 state budget bill, directing the largest additional funds—157 million euros—towards road improvements. This decision, influenced by proposals from various parliamentary bodies and institutions, maintains a focus on income enhancement, national security reinforcement, and strategic investments for higher value addition. The extra funding targets roads, cultural and educational needs, and income boosts. However, this adjustment raises the 2024 state budget deficit to 3 percent of GDP, up from the initially planned 2.9 percent, with a slight rise in government debt to 39.9 percent of GDP from the initial 39.8 percent. The ruling Liberal Movement, led by Seimas Speaker Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, aims to approve the draft budget, emphasizing limitations on further spending increases. Conversely, the opposition Social Democrats, led by Rasa Budbergytė, plan to vote against the bill. The next step involves the bill's second reading, scheduled for Thursday, with an expected adoption by December 5. (ICE VARSAVIA)
