Paphos is to invest over €9 million in restoration and renovation projects in the town and its surrounding area, following the signing of a contract on Thursday.  The contract, signed between the Paphos municipality and contracting company N Gavriel and Sons, foresees an overarching project of renovations and restorations which go by the name “centre of historical documentation of the town and the surrounding areas”.  The planned projects will take place over the next 15 months and will include renovations to over 18,000 square metres worth of open spaces, and maintenance, restoration and conversion of the former police station.  In addition, there will be a “complete regeneration” of the town’s commercial centre and the squares surrounding the town hall.  “It is one of the most important projects the Paphos municipality has launched in the last nine years, since it began its tireless efforts to change and improve the image of Paphos,” the town’s municipal engineer Christos Konstantinidis said.  He also noted that a “special application study of museums” has been prepared by a panel of experts, and that the project at large “is attempting to connect urban space, natural elements, and Paphos’ history”.  According to his design, he said, “Paphos’ natural element, structured urban environment, and its recollection of its important history are in constant contact.”  Also speaking at the signing ceremony, Paphos mayor Phedonos Phedonas spoke of previous successful projects in the town, including the renovation of the town’s Kennedy Square, and the renovation of the town hall square and the surrounding area.  He also spoke about the restoration of the Markideion theatre and Ibrahim’s Han, both of which are now fully operational.
