CONSUMER BANKRUPTCIES AT ALL-TIME HIGH
In 2023 courts declared 21,000 consumer bankruptcies, which is the highest number on record. According to the Central Economic Information Centre (COIG), the upward trend in consumer bankruptcies is due to a number of macroeconomic factors, including interest rate hikes as well as the rising cost of living, which has an impact on consumers’ capacity to repay debt.
