GAM SEEKS TO DEVELOP SOLID WASTE TREATMENT PROCESSES

Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), in cooperation with the consulting company CDM Smith SE and German KfW Development Bank, on Thursday organized a workshop to launch the inaugural report of Labour-Intensive Integrated Solid Waste Management Project. The workshop aims to discuss achievements and future plans of the mechanical-biological treatment of solid waste project, which is underway, in cooperation with the consulting company, and is supported by a financial grant worth 15 million euros provided by the German bank, according to a GAM statement.Speaking at the inaugural session, GAM City Director, Ahmed Malkawi, said the municipality seeks "continuous" development through its multiple partnerships with various institutions and international organizations.Malkwai also noted GAM is working to find "safe" solutions to reduce the negative effects of the continuous spike in the amount of waste resulting from the large increase in population by creating added value to the waste management sector.Meanwhile, GAM city’s Deputy Director for Regions and Environment Affairs, Zaid Sa'aideh, said the mechanical-biological treatment project is a "pioneering and key" enterprise that aims to contribute to establishing a "safe" and environmentally, resource- and climate-friendly municipal waste disposal system in Jordan. The project, which is part of a joint financial agreement between German and Jordanian governments, aims to improve solid waste management system by establishing a biomechanical facility to treat and recycle waste, build the necessary infrastructure for this purpose and provide equipment to reduce greenhouse gases.
