The Central Statistical Office (GUS) has reported that in December 2023, retail sales at constant prices were 2.3 percent lower than in the year before, far from analysts’ expectation of an increase by 1.5 percent, and 11 percent higher compared with the preceding month. As noted by the statistical office, in the final month of 2023 the biggest decreases were recorded in the categories of “furniture, radio, TV and household appliances” (-11 percent), “newspapers, books, other sale in specialised stores” (-8.3 percent) as well as “food, beverages and tobacco products” (-3.6 percent).
