TAIWAN'S TAX REVENUE HITS RECORD HIGH IN 2023

Taipei, Jan. 11 (CNA) Taiwan's tax revenue rose by 5.7 percent last year to a new high of over NT$3.4 tillion (US$109.5 billion), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) said on Thursday.Total tax revenue in 2023 reached NT$3.4319 trillion, exceeding the budgeted amount by NT$361.7 billion, MOF data showed. The ministry said the higher total tax revenue resulted from record high collection in some of the largest tax revenue categories, while only two types of taxes -- the tobacco and alcohol tax and land value increment tax -- failed to meet budgetary targets. In terms of individual tax categories, profit-seeking enterprise income tax revenues rose by 4.7 percent over 2022 levels to NT$1.076 trillion, said Liang Kuan-hsuan (梁冠璇), a senior specialist in the ministry's Department of Statistics. The increase was driven mainly by businesses settling tax bills from higher-than-expected profits made in 2022, Liang said.Meanwhile, personal income tax revenue rose by 14.4 percent over a year earlier to NT$749.7 billion, while business tax revenue climbed 3 percent to NT$560.9 billion, according to Liang.Stock transaction tax -- which reflects the level of activity on Taiwan's stock market -- also reached NT$197.3 billion, marking its second-highest total ever, and an increase of 12.4 percent compared to 2022, Liang said.In particular, stock transaction tax revenues received a boost from enthusiasm surrounding AI-related stocks, which helped push the market's average daily turnover in 2023 up to NT$334.8 billion, its second-highest total ever, Liang said.(By Chang Ai and Matthew Mazzetta)Enditem/cs (ICE TAIPEI)
