MALCOLM JOLLEY: THE NEWS OUT OF BENVENUTO BRUNELLO TORONTO: SOME GOOD, SOME BAD—

In Toronto, over a hundred wine enthusiasts gathered for Brunello Day, a tasting event held simultaneously in various global locations. Organized by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino, the Toronto event featured representatives from 35 producers showcasing 70 fine red wines. Brunello di Montalcino, a success story among Italy's premium wines, took the spotlight, with a focus on the 2019 vintage as a "Goldilocks year." Despite challenges in the 2023 harvest due to powdery mildew, the 2019 wines were praised for their richness and complexity, while the 2018 Riservas, with a focus on "pure Sangiovese," displayed elegance and readiness. The tasting provided insights into the impact of weather on vintages and the winemakers' ability to adapt in the information age, with the 2018 wines predicted to become sought-after rarities.
