VIDEO GAMING IN ITALY

In 2023, Italy's video game revenue reached an estimated 2.83 billion U.S. dollars, constituting over 47 percent of digital media revenue. While trailing behind major European gaming markets, Italy's gaming sector has experienced substantial growth, influenced by shifting public perceptions and government incentives like tax credits for developers. The number of Italian gamers rebounded in 2023, expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels by 2025, with a significant portion being players aged up to 24. Soccer-themed FIFA games dominated sales, and smartphones emerged as the preferred gaming device, followed by gaming consoles. Mobile gaming, especially puzzle and slot titles, thrived, reflecting Italy's unique gaming landscape. Despite a rich cultural history, Italy's gaming industry has recently flourished, with a 50 percent increase in game developers since 2021, propelled by government incentives and passionate gaming communities hosting major events like Milan Games Week and the Italian Video Game Awards.
