EU to mobilize 10 bln euros of investments in trans-Caspian route between Europe, C. AsiaEuropean and international financial institutions will allocate 10 billion euros for investing in a transport corridor between Europe and Central Asia, European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis said at an investors' forum, which opened in Brussels on Monday."I am very pleased to see that international partners present today are committing to provide 10 billion euros in investments to develop sustainable transport connectivity in Central Asia, including new European Commission and European Investment Bank commitments of 1.5 billion euros," Dombrovskis said. The Global Gateway Investors Forum is being attended by high-ranking representatives of the European Commission, countries of the EU, Central Asia, the Caucasus, as well as Turkey. Its participants include G7 states, financial institutions and private companies.International observers view Global Gateway as a European alternative to China's Belt and Road project. The European Commission said in a press release that the military conflict in Ukraine "has underlined the urgency to find alternative reliable efficient trade routes between Europe and Asia that do not transit Russia."The participants in the two-day forum will discuss the required amount of investments to transform the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor into a modern, multimodal and efficient route, connecting Europe with Central Asia via the Black Sea and the South Caucasus within 15 days. The discussion is based on the study on sustainable transport connections between Europe and Central Asia, conducted by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for the European Commission in the summer of 2023. It identified 33 priority goals in physical infrastructure and seven key connectivity actions, the implementation of which will boost the efficiency and the economic appeal of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor. They were presented at the EU-Central Asia Economic Forum, held in Almaty in May 2023. (ICE ALMATY)
