The National Bank of Cambodia has seen a significant increase in digital payments in 2023, with registered e-wallet accounts reaching 19.7 million and total transactions reaching 601.3 million, a 28.7% YoY increase. The transaction amounts rose by 18% to $75.8 billion, 2.4 times the country's GDP. The bank has continued to develop and modernize its payment system, focusing on promoting financial inclusion and enabling easier, safer, and faster transactions. The Bakong payment system, developed in partnership with Japanese tech firm Soramitsu, has seen a 5x increase in transactions year on year, reaching 200.93 million transactions. The bank plans to link its mobile payment app Bakong with China and India this year to promote cross-border economic activities using local currencies. (ICE BANGKOK)
