CINECITTA EXEC BRINGS BATTLE FOR GLOBAL MARKETS TO TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL

Roberto Stabile, the head of special projects at Cinecitta and head of international relations at ANICA, is spearheading Italy's quest for global recognition at the Toronto Film Festival. Despite the success of six Italian films at the Venice Film Festival, Stabile aims to extend the reach of Italian cinema beyond local theaters and red carpets. To achieve this, he introduces the Italian Film Distribution Fund, offering financial support to local distributors worldwide that acquire Italian films. The fund encourages producers to create more content for international markets, promoting co-productions to mitigate risks and pool resources. With an aggressive marketing campaign, the fund allocates up to 50,000 euros for theatrical releases and an additional 15,000 euros for digital video-on-demand releases. Italy seeks to enhance its presence in the global film industry, fostering co-productions, introducing film tax credits, and engaging with international markets through strategic events like the Toronto Film Festival. Stabile's initiatives respond to concerns about the lack of innovation and limited international appeal in recent Italian cinema, aiming to rejuvenate the industry and connect with a broader, younger audience. The Toronto Film Festival serves as a gateway for Italy to enter the U.S. film market, following previous efforts in Hollywood and collaborations with U.S. and French film producers to address shared concerns and explore new financing models for independent cinema.
