As we usher in 2024, I fondly reminisce about the plethora of exceptional wines encountered during my extensive travels through various Italian regions (Collio, Trento, Bolzano, Valpolicella), Canada, and California in 2023. This journey allowed me to discover world-class wines that epitomized their respective terroirs, ranging from historic to emerging wine regions. Reflecting on the year, I've compiled a list of particularly memorable wines, understanding the profound connection between our sense of smell and lasting memories. Among the standout selections are Amarone Della Valpolicella DOCG wines from the renowned Valpolicella region. Notable among them is the 2018 Secondo Marco (barrel sample), characterized by its expressive and elegant profile, featuring a complex bouquet of herbs, menthol, plum, prunes, and tobacco. The palate reveals smooth and refreshing notes of red fruit, spice, and seamlessly integrated tannins. Crafted by winemaker Marco Speri, this preview of the 2018 vintage showcases the distinct qualities that have established Secondo Marco's reputation over the past decade, with an anticipated release date around 2028-2048+.
