Kazakhstan ratifies agreement on wind farm construction by France in Zhambyl regionPresident of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signed the law On the ratification of a special agreement between the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the government of the French Republic on the implementation of cooperation in the fight against global warming, the presidential press service reported.As previously reported by the Minister of Energy of Kazakhstan Almasadam Satkaliyev, it is planned to build a wind power plant (WPP) with a total capacity of 1 GW near the village of Mirny in the Zhambyl region.“A large-scale project to build a hybrid wind power plant with a capacity of 1 GW and 300 MW energy storage facility will continue the development of the renewable energy sector and help Kazakhstan to achieve its sustainable development goals. The power plant is to be launched in 2026-2027,” - Olga Bulavkina, a member of the Committee on Agrarian Issues, Environmental Management and Rural Development said.According to her, the project will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by at least 2 million tonnes per year, create up to 250 permanent jobs, and 2,500 temporary jobs.The project will be implemented at the expense of the investor; about 820 billion tenge of investments will be attracted, and an additional 3.6 billion kWh of green energy will be generated.The French company Total Eren (a subsidiary of TotalEnergies) signed an agreement on the development of the Mirny project, the largest wind energy project in Kazakhstan in 2022. It involves the construction of a wind farm with a capacity of 1 GW and an energy storage system with a capacity of 300 MWh/600 MWh.The preliminary cost of the project was estimated at $1.9 billion.
