GE VERNOVA COMPLETES 2GW SUBIYA PLANT UPGRADE

Kuwait's Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy Ministry has announced the completion of the upgrades of four GE Vernova 9F.03 class gas turbines at the 2GW Subiya combined-cycle power plant in the Gulf state. The project is expected to increase the power plant’s block output by up to 6.3 per cent and reduce the heat rate by as much as 1.8 per cent, leading to a combined increase in power production of up to 70MW.“This increase in efficiency and output will allow more power to be produced without increasing fuel consumption and the resulting carbon dioxide emissions,” US-based GE Vernova said. The project avoids emissions that would be equivalent to approximately 16,000 cars on Kuwait's roads, it added.Under the service agreement with the local engineering, procurement and construction contractor Alghanim International, GE Vernova provided Advanced Gas Path (AGP) upgrades for the four 9F.03 turbines in blocks two and three at the Subiya plant, along with the supply and maintenance services of the units for seven years. The AGP upgrade will help deliver more fuel-efficient and reliable power output to Kuwait's power grid to meet the increase in electricity demand, especially during peak seasons. The upgrades were completed as part of a multi-year service agreement between Alghanim International and GE Vernova, which followed the signing of an operations and maintenance agreement between Alghanim and the ministry for all three combined-cycle power blocks at Subiya.According to GE Vernova, the goal was to boost power production, increase the time between planned maintenance cycles, drive fuel efficacy and reduce costs and carbon dioxide emissions per megawatt of power generated.
