RED SEA CRISIS IMPACTS JORDAN’S AUTO IMPORTS

As the Red Sea crisis looms heavy, Jordan’s imports of cars is being impeded by its far-reaching implications, according to a stakeholder.“This crisis has increased shipping costs due to cargo delays, slower deliveries and service disruption,” President of the General Association of Automotive Agents, Spare Parts and Accessories Traders Salama Jabali, told The Jordan Times. At this stage it is of utmost importance to propose price limits on freight rates, as there is an apparent slowdown in the local automotive industry and sector operator are already struggling, Jabali warned. He said that global supply chains continue to face additional pressures this year; this shows that the current crisis is having a bigger effect on the supply chain than the pandemic.“This disruption is significantly affecting our industry. However, on a larger scale, it is causing shocks and chaos to the global trade”, said Jabali.Further, he pointed that the purchasing power for automobiles is on the decline, coupled with the distress stakeholders are experiencing due to delays and rescheduled shipments. “Whereas now a shipment that used to arrive in 30-33 days now takes up to four months,” he explained. Moreover, the ongoing Bab Al Mandeb crisis is leading to port congestion, worsening supply shortages, and reduced capacity. This has decreased the number of containers stakeholders order over the year. Jabali added that “the auto sector is facing a drop in purchasing power despite price stability”. As for the availability of automotive spare parts and accessories in local markets, he said that there is easy availability of the automotive parts and there are ample amounts in the market.
