THE ITALIAN GAMES INDUSTRY GREW 50% YEAR-ON-YEAR, TRADE BODY REPORTS

In 2022, the number of employees in the Italian video game industry surged by 50% compared to 2021, indicating significant growth reported by the Italian Interactive Digital Entertainment Association (IIDEA). This expansion is attributed to the introduction of a tax credit by the Italian government in 2021, offering a 25% tax credit on development costs up to €1 million for eligible companies. With over 2,400 individuals engaged in game development in 2022, 20% of companies employed between 11 and 20 staff, marking a 5% increase from 2021. Additionally, nearly 70% of companies expressed plans to expand their workforce or collaborate with new partners in the next two years, reflecting a 10% rise from the previous year. The industry remains relatively youthful, with only 7% of employees aged over 40, while around 82% fall between 25 and 35 years old. Moreover, there has been a slight increase in the representation of women in the workforce, reaching 24% in 2022. Notably, the 2023 Italian Video Game Awards recognized achievements in the industry, with Terrorbane winning Best Italian Game and Ubisoft Milan receiving accolades for Outstanding Italian Company.
