BEER SALES IN DECLINE

The Union of Brewing Industry Employers – Polish Breweries has reported that 2023 was the worst year for beer companies in recent years as beer sales tumbled by 6.9 percent compared with 2022, mainly due to an increase in beer prices by 15.2 percent on average. Poles bought as many as 400 million half-liter bottles and cans of beer less than in 2022!According to the Union, the biggest decrease was recorded in the top and ultra-premium category, i.e. by 14.6 percent, and in the economy segment, i.e. by 10 percent. At the same time, in terms of value last year the beer market grew by 7.1 percent to PLN22.8bn, compared with PLN21.3bn in 2022.The non-alcoholic beer segment turned out to be much more resistant to bad economic conditions, showing relative stability in 2023 against the background of a falling market (-0.4 million l). Thus, once again, the share of non-alcoholic beers in the entire category increased - from 6.3% to 6.5%.Non-alcoholic beers have resisted significant declines, which shows the strength of the NoLo (no alcohol, low alcohol) trend, which has become a permanent part of Polish beer culture.Poland is the 3rd largest beer producer in the EU. Beer is still the largest FMCG category in Poland, very important for small traditional trade. (ICE VARSAVIA)
