KAZAKHSTAN-REFINERIES-AVIATION/FUEL

Kazakhstan refineries ready to produce up to 55,000 tonnes of Jet A-1 aviation fuel monthly - Ministry of EnergyDomestic oil refineries are ready to produce Jet A-1 aviation fuel instead of TS-1 and PT jet fuel, the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan reports.“Currently, the modernized Atyrau, Pavlodar and Shymkent refineries are ready to produce Jet A-1 instead of TS-1/RT in the amount of 55,000 tonnes per month. If the transportation and consumption infrastructure is ready, a phased transition of the refineries to Jet A-1 production can begin,” the Ministry of Energy said in a statement. It is noted that the production of Jet A-1 involves a complete reconfiguration of the corresponding plant capacities, since the parallel production of Jet A-1 and TS-1 fuel is impossible. It was decided to switch Kazakhstan airports to JET A-1 fuel, used in more than 70 countries around the world. Almaty Airport is expected to be ready to switch to JET A-1 in June 2024 after upgrading its fueling complex. As previously reported, the production of jet fuel in Kazakhstan does not cover the need: in 2022, 648,000 tonnes of jet fuel were produced in Kazakhstan, while consumption amounted to 806,000 tonnes, the difference being covered by imports of jet fuel from Russia. At the same time, the Ministry of Transport noted an increase in flights of foreign airlines through Kazakhstan (90% versus 2022), which raises the need for aviation fuel estimated at 1.3 million tonnes. In 2023, the Kazakh authorities decided to purchase 500,000 tons of jet fuel from China in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. In October, Kazakhstan's national carrier Air Astana and PetroChina International Kazakhstan signed a memorandum of strategic partnership to provide Jet A-1 Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).It was noted that Jet A-1 fuel complies with IATA standards and differs from the TS-1/RT brands used in Kazakhstan in production and storage technologies. The main advantage of Jet A-1 is its low fire hazard, low composition of exhaust gases when emitted into the atmosphere and an increase in the overhaul cycle of aircraft engines. There are three oil refineries in Kazakhstan – in Atyrau (ANPZ), Pavlodar Petrochemical Plant (PNHZ) and Shymkent (ShNPZ).
