The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) with the financial support of the European Union have inaugurated a new solar initiative and business center at the Nabiyeh municipality in the Matn region. This inauguration came in partnership with the Lebanese Ministry of Interior and Municipalities (MoIM) and the Municipality of Nabiyeh. In details, the solar project stands as one of 20 projects that will be implemented across Lebanon with the objective of assisting municipalities in transitioning to more sustainable energy solutions. The system set up in Nabiyeh generates up to 76 Kilowatts peak (kWp) which facilitates the continuous operation of municipal facilities and eventually the LED streetlights. According to the UNDP Lebanon Acting Resident Representative, this power source will ensure uninterrupted services for the people of Nabiyeh and enhances the safety and quality of life of 4,200 residents during evening hours. However, it remains crucial for the municipal authorities to perform regular maintenance in order to sustain this solution into the future. It is worth noting that kWp refers to energy production of a solar energy system at peak performance. In turn, if operated at peak performance, the Nabiyeh solar energy system would produce 76 kW per hour.
