SWEDISH STARTUPS ATTRACT MORE CAPITAL THAN EU NEIGHBOURS

Despite a global decline in startup investments, Sweden has weathered the storm better than most countries, reports SvD. The country has seen a 12% drop in venture capital investments in 2023 compared to a 32-42% decrease in the UK, France, and Germany. The figures come from the Sweden Tech Report, which was developed by Business Sweden, the Swedish Institute (Sw. Svenska Institut), Vinnova, and The Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth (Sw. Tillväxtverket). The report attributes the country's resilience to its sustainability profile. Swedish startups secured EUR 4.7 billion in 2023, down from EUR 8.3 billion in 2021 and EUR 5.4 billion in 2022. Stockholm-based firms received 90% of the total investment. The report notes the existence of 41 unicorn companies in Sweden and that the combined valuation of Swedish startups is EUR 239 billion - a figure that is slightly higher than last year but significantly lower than the EUR 336 billion of 2021.
