BRAZIL, THAILAND COME TO AN AGREEMENT OVER WTO DISPUTE ABOUT SUGAR SUBSIDIES

Thailand and Brazil have resolved an eight-year dispute at the World Trade Organisation over the Thai government's alleged breach of WTO rules by granting subsidies to sugarcane farmers. The dispute arose from a 2016 complaint filed by Brazil, alleging that Thailand's sugarcane plantation and sugar-milling procedures violated WTO subsidies. The two countries have been consulting to resolve the issue, with Thailand reforming its sugar milling and plantation processes in line with WTO regulations. Thailand's reform process has been completed, and the 2022 Sugarcane and Sugar Act was implemented in December 2022. Thailand is the third-largest sugar exporter after Brazil and India.
