ZAMBEZI VALLEY AND PARTNERS INVEST 40M METICALS TO TEST ORGANIC TECHNOLOGY in Fields

Nearly 20 families producing vegetables, beans, potatoes and rice, based in nine districts in central Mozambique, are involved in testing organic fertilisers and pesticides in their fields with the aim of replacing chemical synthesis throughout the region in the near future. These are the districts of Angónia, Tete and Moatize (Tete Province), Vandúzi, Sussundenga and Báruè (Manica) and Nhamatanda, Búzi and Dondo (Sofala). According to the director of the Technical and Financial Assistance Services of the Zambezi Valley Development Agency, Nelson António, this initiative is the result of an agreement signed a year ago with the companies Bioagrie and Kimitec, which are geared towards producing technological solutions on an organic basis. “Organic solutions present a better proposal in the sense of producing more at less cost, while also being favourable to public health and the conservation of biodiversity,” he explained. According to the official, the project is budgeted at 40 million meticais and, in this first phase, testing will involve institutions that work with producers, organisations linked to research, research and academia, with a view to ensuring the existence of a platform for discussion, since a technical and scientific basis will be needed for the approval of this method.
