JORDAN RANKS 7TH AMONG ARAB COUNTRIES IN 2023 FREEDOM INDEX

In “Freedom House” annual “Freedom in the World” report released in 2024, Jordan was ranked seventh among Arab nations and 143th globally in terms of political freedoms and civil liberties from the period of Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2023.The report noted that “public outrage” over the Israeli Occupation’s aggression against Gaza has caused several Middle Eastern countries, including Jordan, to loosen its restrictions on demonstrations of solidarity and were allowed to proceed with no impediment by the authorities.Jordan scored 33 points out of 100, a result that is a combination of the political rights score, which is 11/40, and civil liberties score, which is 22/60 - with no change to the aggregate score from the previous year.Jordan advanced one place in 2023, ranking 143th globally while in 2022, the Kingdom was ranked 144th. Jordan's ranking among Arab countries remained unchanged - sitting at 7th place. Syria, South Sudan, and Sudan were ranked among “worst of the worst” for having the worst aggregate score of political rights and civil liberties according to Freedom House, with Syria and South Sudan scoring one point out of 100, and Sudan six out of 100.Out of the Middle East’s 13 countries, only 8 percent were designated as “free”, 15 percent as “partly free” and 77 percent as “not free”.“Israel” was the only “country” to be classified as free among Middle Eastern countries according to Freedom House, with Lebanon and Kuwait designated as partially free, with the rest of 12 countries regarded as not free.According to the report, global freedom declined for the 18th consecutive year in 2023, and described the “breadth and depth of the deterioration [of freedoms] as extensive” - Political rights and civil liberties were diminished in 52 countries, while only 21 countries made improvements (ICE AMMAN)
