CROATIA: EUROSTAT - CROATIA AND MALTA REPORTED STRONGEST EU GDP GROWTH AT YEAR- end 2023

Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU), reported on Friday its new calculations show that in 4Q2023, activity as a whole had stagnated in both the eurozone and EU, but on an individual country-basis, both Croatia and Malta had recorded the strongest gross domestic product (GDP) growth, by 4.3%, when compared to the same quarter in 2022, Croatian media report.     Croatia’s GDP in 3Q2023 had increased by 3.0%, while Denmark had recorded 3.1% GDP growth in 4Q2023, when compared year-on-year to 4Q2022, while the biggest drop in 4Q2023 was 9.1% recorded by Ireland.On a quarterly basis, the strongest GDP growth in 4Q2023, was 2.0% by Denmark, and was followed by Croatia with a GDP increase by 1.3% compared to its 0.5% increase in 3Q2023.Eurostat noted that in the euro zone the GDP in the period October to December 2023, had increased by on 0.1% from the same period of 2022, which was the same “in the summer quarter” – while economic activity in the EU was up by 0.2% on an annual basis in 4Q2023, following an increase of just 0.1% in 3Q2023.  In both the eurozone and EU, the number of employed rose quarter-on-quarter in 4Q2023 by 0.3% and 0.2%, respectively, which was only a marginally faster rate of employment, with the biggest quarterly increase in employment recorded by 1.5% in Romania, by 1.5%. Meanwhile, the number of employed increased quarter-on-quarter in Croatia by 0.5% in 4Q2023, after an increase of 1.0% in 3Q2023. The Eurostat data shows that the number of employed persons in Croatia in 4Q2023, increased by 1.9% when compared 4Q2022 to the same period in 2022, which was the same as in the third quarter – while the closest to Croatia at year-end 2023, was Lithuania and Luxembourg, with increases of 2.1% and 1.7%, respectively.
