INVESTMENT IN INDONESIA’S SMELTERS IS PROJECTED TO REACH EUR 10.7 BILLION

During a parliamentary hearing in Jakarta on Tuesday (19/3), the Acting Director General of Minerals and Coal at the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry, Bambang Suswantono, informed that the overall investment in smelter development in Indonesia in 2023-2024 period is projected to amount to EUR 10.7 billion for the construction of 16 smelters. The 16 smelters will consist of seven nickel smelters, seven bauxite smelters, one iron and one copper smelter. The seven nickel smelters entail a EUR 2.47 billion investment, with five already operational since 2023. The seven bauxite sector smelters are valued at EUR 5.41 billion, with EUR 47.6 million invested in the iron smelter. Susantono further stated, Indonesia has issued production quotas of 152.62 million metric tons of nickel ore, 99.24 million tons of copper ore, 15.88 million tons of bauxite ore and 44,481.63 tons of tin ore so far this year. In total, the government has issued approvals for 191 miners in the nickel, tin, and copper sectors, while more than 500 production proposals are still being processed. Bambang Suswantono stressed the importance of efficient industrialisation policies in the mineral industry.
