€39 MILLION IN COHESION FUNDS TO UPGRADE WASTEWATER TREATMENT IN VELIKA GORICA

Today, the European Commission has approved almost €39 million in financing from the Cohesion Fund to improve the wastewater collection and treatment system in Velika Gorica, Croatia, which will benefit both the local population and the environment. The project will receive an additional support of €11.3 million from the Cohesion Fund before its overall conclusion, scheduled for Spring 2027.The project involves the construction of 106km of gravity sewer - an underground sewerage system -, 18km of pressure sewer and 39 pumping stations. The upgraded system will benefit close to 76,000 inhabitants that are already connected to the system or are ready to connect. This investment will put an end to the dangerous hazards caused by the current system’s inability to handle existing flows, which results in untreated wastewater being discharged into a nearby local river. The project will protect the environment by putting an end to this overflow of sewerage and untreated wastewater, limiting water contamination and the negative impact it can have on health and the environment. The new sewerage system will also ensure that the area’s wastewater complies with the EU legislation for urban wastewater and water quality and quantity.More information on EU funded projects in Croatia available on Kohesio and the Cohesion Open Data Platform.
