Chinese power giant eyes hydropower projects in KazakhstanState Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), a Chinese energy company, plans to explore opportunities for large-scale hydropower projects and the construction of combined cycle turbines in Kazakhstan, according to the presidential press service.During a working visit to China, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with Liu Mingsheng, Chairman of SPIC. "Liu Mingsheng revealed plans to explore opportunities for large-scale hydropower projects and the construction of combined cycle turbines in Kazakhstan,” the press service said.Discussions also revolved around potential collaboration in the renewable energy sector. Tokayev was briefed on the operations of China Power International Holding's subsidiary in Kazakhstan. Over the last five years, the subsidiary has developed a wind energy project in Zhanatas and constructed a solar power plant in Karaganda.Mingsheng outlined new investment ventures, including plans to construct wind power plants with a total capacity of 1 GW in the Zhambyl and Pavlodar regions, with an investment exceeding $1 billion.President Tokayev underscored Kazakhstan's interest in leveraging cutting-edge international technologies and practices in renewable energy. He extended an invitation to Mingsheng to participate in the Astana International Forum in June.Last year, during President Tokayev's state visit to China, an agreement was signed to advance a large-scale renewable energy project in Kazakhstan. This agreement involves collaboration between the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan, Samruk-Kazyna JSC, China Power International Holding Ltd., and SANY Renewable Energy.The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) signed a $36 million loan agreement to support the development of a 100 MW wind farm in the Zhambyl region, in partnership with China Power International Holding and Visor International DMCC, with co-financing from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).A project for the construction of a large-scale wind power plant with a capacity of 1 GW in the Zhambyl region will be developed in accordance with the agreement.China Power International Holding Ltd. (CPIH), a subsidiary of the state-owned State Power Investment Corporation Limited (SPIC), reported significant achievements by the end of 2022. CPIH showcased total assets valued at 349.9 billion yuan, coupled with a robust total installed capacity of 55.44 million kilowatts, with clean energy comprising 62% of its portfolio. Highlighting its global presence, CPIH's international ventures span across Kazakhstan, Brazil, Pakistan, Mexico, Vietnam, Australia, Chile, and various other countries. (ICE ALMATY)
