NEOM PRIORITISES WORK ON THE LINE MARINA MODULES

Neom is focusing construction efforts on modules at the marina for the 170-kilometre-long pair of parallel buildings that make up The Line. Building the interconnected modules at the marina will be one of the most ambitious building projects ever undertaken. Each module is 800 metres long and 500 metres high. When completed, they will create two continuous mirrored buildings known as The Line. “The modules at the marina are moving full steam ahead,” says a source working on the project. Each module will have 14-16 cores. Earlier this year, Neom invited contractors to prequalify to bid for contracts involving structural works, including constructing the building cores. Contractors are preparing to submit bids by 26 May to construct the raft foundations for modules 44, 45, 46, 47 and 48 at the marina. The raft construction will include the world’s second-largest concrete pour of 43,000 cubic metres onto what is referred to as the mega core. Neom expects companies to form joint ventures or consortiums to execute the work. The raft foundation follows on from piling work for The Line. Piling work in the marina area began last year. Nine contractors were engaged for the piling as part of a framework agreement. Contractors were also engaged in the excavation work for the marina, which involved moving about 1 million cubic metres of earth every week, making it the world’s largest excavation project. The marina is on the other side of The Line to the sea, meaning ships headed for the marina must pass through The Line buildings. This presents a significant engineering challenge, requiring a 165-metre-wide waterway to pass through the 500-metre-tall buildings. Neom’s focus on the marina section of The Line has led to a reprioritisation of work for the parallel rail and infrastructure corridor known as The Spine. According to multiple sources working on the project, this reprioritisation has affected hundreds of roles as the delivery schedule for some project elements has changed. The sections of The Spine where work is said to be temporarily discontinued are the Coastal Desert West, Coastal Desert East, Delta Junction and Upper Valley. Work will continue on the section of The Spine that serves the marina, the Mountain Running Tunnels and the Connector.   Neom declined to comment on changes to the delivery schedule for The Spine. Multibillion-dollar contracts have already been placed with contractors for the Connector and Mountain Running Tunnels. In May 2023, a joint venture of Italy-based Webuild and Riyadh-headquartered Sajco secured a $2bn contract to construct the Connector South rail line linking The Line with Oxagon. Contracts for the Mountain Running Tunnels were placed in June 2022. A joint venture of Shibh Al Jazira Contracting (Sajco), China State Construction Engineering Corporation and FCC Construction was awarded $2.7bn-worth of contracts for lots two and three of the scheme. A separate contract worth about $1.8bn for lots four and five was awarded to a team of Archirodon, Samsung Engineering and Hyundai Engineering.   For registration as supplier: https://www.neom.com/en-us/our-business/suppliers (ICE RIYADH)
