FIRST SMART WATER METERS INSTALLED IN NICOSIA

The first smart water meters were installed in Nicosia on Monday, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the capital’s municipality and its water board.  Monday’s launch saw two smart meters installed, with the hope that 150,000 will be installed in total. Of those, 3,000 are to be installed in Nicosia’s old town, where the first installations are being carried out.  Mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said water is of “vital importance”, as “in countries like ours which have always had to fight against the lack of this precious commodity, its proper use and the prevention of wastage is imperative.”  Nicosia water board director Konstantinos Parmaklis said the board’s long-term goal is “the complete replacement of water meters in the Nicosia district by smart water meters.”  He said the water meters being installed will “provide daily remote measurements and provide data which will help in the early detection of leaks, both on private land and in the supply.” (ICE BEIRUT)
